Last night every green blooded (Yes because most of us are Irish) fellow from Boston was treated to a 17th NBA championship. First the Pats, then the Red Sox after that, and now finally the Celtics can add themselves to the list of Boston sports teams putting the city back on the map. The only thing sweeter in my mind would have been the Magic hoisting that trophy last night, but if they couldn’t then I’m glad the boys from my hometown could.
The best thing about this game 6 spanking the C’s handed the Lakers, was seeing 3 great players finally win their championships. Many great players have retired with out getting to feel the ultimate accomplishment in the NBA, a title. Three quick names that come to mind are Charles Barkley, John Stockton, and Karl Malone. I was, up until this year, convinced that “The Truth” and KG’s careers would suffer the same fate. But alas that was not to be. With a little under a minute left and a 40 point lead Paul Peirce threw a bucket of gator aid over coach Rivers. Garnett was courtside exchanging hugs and Hi-5’s with teammates, fans, and honestly I think anyone who congratulated him. As you will see at the bottom video he was very emotional after the game in an interview he screamed: “Anything is possible.” And “Top of the world.”
The “Truth” who of this group is the only career Celtic, fittingly won the finals MVP award and thanked the fans of Boston for sticking by him all the years he has been there. All very emotional, they celebrated a Cinderella season after going from only winning 20 games, (or in KG and Allen’s case just being on going nowhere teams) to being NBA champions. Honestly I can’t see it happening to three better players either.
